Gluten free a growing market Print

altA record-breaking number of exhibitors and attendees at the Auckland Gluten Free Food & Allergy Show in June reflected what is a growing niche market. This year 95 exhibitors shared their products and expertise with 5925 visitors.

Debbie Armour, operations manager of the show, was thrilled with the amount of positive feedback received from both exhibitors and visitors. “We saw record numbers through the door and a high quality of products showcased over the weekend.”

The Gluten Free Food & Allergy Show not only gives producers the opportunity to exhibit their products to the public, health and industry professionals host a series of seminars that give instruction, guidance and lend an ear to niche consumers.

The often standing-room only seminars included:

• Unravelling food allergy and intolerance, Anna Richards, Registered Dietitian

• How to get the nutrition you need on a special diet, Claire Turnbull, Mission Nutrition and HFG Nutritionist

• Endometriosis and pelvic pain – a gutsful, Deborah Bush, CEO Endometriosis

• Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Anna Richards, Registered Dietitian

• Tips & tricks for better gluten-free baking, Kevin Gilbert, Lievito Bakery

• Asthmas Triggers, Karen Little and Ann Wheat, Registered Nurses

• The effects nasty chemicals have on your health, Malcolm Rands, ecostore

• Coeliac disease – to biopsy or not to biopsy? Dr Jonathan Bishop, Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist, Starship Children’s Health

• Inflammatory Bowel Disease the Last Taboo Subject, Sue Steel, Registered Nurse

The event was held at Auckland’s ASB Showgrounds. Wellington’s show will be held in late August and the Christchurch one, in late October.
